Interview with Taiwo I. Ajao, author of Adunni Dares to Dream

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Taiwo I Ajao, Author of the new creative non-fiction Adunni Dares to Dream. I am one of Adunni’s four future children 🙂 Adunni’s Dream became real to me when I was a junior in high school thinking about my future career. Adunni’s Dream and passion has guided my career path and landed me where I am today: as acting Secretary of Mom’s Non-profit, Public Charity: Noah’s Ark Medical Clinic and Mission (NAMCAM). NAMCAM is a public health, medical & educational outreach to poor, disadvantaged children starting in Nigeria, West Africa.

When you pick up the book Adunni Dares to Dream, you read about one such child, and her limitations due to poverty and misfortune. I share Adunni’s story because it has touched me deeply and I believe that it will inspire multitudes to Dare to Dream and watch God turn their situation around! I have been dreaming for years and years about writing a book and there’s been one person that wouldn’t ever let me forget that dream, and that was Adunni. I never would have thought in my wildest dreams that my victories would come from honoring the legacy of another woman. I am greatly encouraged and honored to have the opportunity to share Mom’s story.

How do you find time to connect with God?
I have found that connecting with God is a moment-by-moment love affair. I rely on Him within each moment. When I experience a joy or endure pain, God is experiencing it with me and is ready to hear, see & know the response of my heart. I have found that this is the definition of pray without ceasing: including God in every part of my life and communicating with him on every matter. God has truly become the Lover of every part of me.

Tell us about your journey to publication.
It has been frustrating! I have come up with many book ideas over the years, but none yielded fruit. Be patient: the inspiration might not come right away. But when it comes, it comes by storm! Each aspect of your dream is a milestone, from the title to the content to the imagery. God makes all things beautiful in His time!!!

Tell us about your current book?
Adunni Dares to Dream is the true story of my mother and her childhood. My mother just retired from over 35 years of medical care to children as a Pediatrician. Every so often my siblings and I get to hear aspects of her story. Well finally, her story has been put together into a lovely inspirational story of hope, hard work and perseverance. I am so proud of her and all that she has become and I am honored to share her story with the children who she has spent her whole entire career loving and serving.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?
Adunni Dares to Dream came from a season when I finally stopped, sat down and opened my heart & ears to the stories of my elders. Often we miss these opportunities when we are too busy or not sensitive to the relationships we should have with our elders. This book is a very beautiful, true story, written by God. It is my elders’ legacy and those of myself, my siblings and our children. I share the story, because I believe it needs to be told and that generations need to hear it. I also share Adunni’s story to remind all of us to stop and sit at our parents’ and grandparents’ feet again. Let us treasure our heritage and our rich legacies. Every family has them. Let’s glean from the wisdom of our elders because one day, we will not have the opportunity to hear all of their truth and facts any more.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?
God is an expert in making the impossible possible.
Sometimes your dreams are not just your dreams: they are actually God’s purpose and destiny for you.
Wait for it. It may not come when you want it, but God is always right not time!
God is not a cliche god. He is real. He is tangible. And he will make moves for you.

What’s next for you?
We are working on linking the Adunni character to a health literacy and education campaign that we will pair with the medical outreach in Nigeria. This is so that we can inspire children back in Africa and teach health concepts to children and their parents that are sometimes misunderstood. Also, a lot of folks are enamored by the Mike character. We are going to go deeper to reveal his character, his thought processes and his uncommon wisdom in the sequel. We are very excited.
