INTERVIEW | Aisha (A.Life) Gant

Aisha, describe yourself for our visitors.

Wow! What can I say? (LOL) I am who I am. I am a mother of 2 girls, I am an author/poet, I am an owner/operator of a salon, I am an entrepreneur(I created and patented the Ears Free Hair Wrap), and I am a personal trainer (who needs personal training)(LOL) BUT MOST OF ALL, I am a child of God with a sense of humor; who believes if I can’t smile or laugh about any and every situation, I must remove myself immediately! I love laughter and because laughter doeth good like a medicine, I figure; I can’t complain about anything! If I did, it wouldn’t change nothing ‘no way!’ (smiles) Just be happy, On purpose!

How do you find time to connect with God?

Honestly, I don’t find time because I Stay Connected. Now that’s not to say, my being busy doesn’t jerk on the cord a bit, I just know that my connection to my Daddy is permanent and without Him, I couldn’t do me! In fact, there would be no me.

Do you have a favorite bible verse and or quote you wish to share?

Hmm? As Elijah told Elisha;…you ask a hard thing….(smiles) If I really begin to go into my fav’s, we’d be here for a while. So I’ll give you a few. My first bible fav, as a little girl, was and is; Matthew 8:27…What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!? Then we have Jeremiah 32:27 I am the God of all flesh, IS THERE ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR ME? However, last but not least, Numbers 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Okay, Okay…You asked me…(LOL) But my mantra/qoute is: I am Billionairally Blessed to be a Blessing to Billions!

Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?

Another hard one…(smiles) Um, I like Victoria Christopher Murray, Kimberla Lawson, Jaquelin Thomas, to name a few. And of course my favorite books would be my own! (LOL) Naw! I can be real super-spiritual and say, "The B-I-B-L-E, yes that’s the book for me…" But I don’t want to be struck down for lying because I have fallen asleep on it a time or two. (LOL) But on a more serious note; anything I have ever read of those ladies, I enjoyed.

Tell us about your journey to publication.

As you may or may not know, I am self-published and my journey started a long time ago. I just kept forgetting to put gas in the car, so it stopped on me several times. (LOL) But really I have always loved to write and it wasn’t until I experienced some rough times in my marriage that led me to the drink of a pen’s ink. Those times pushed me to reveal to myself, who I really was. So in 2007, I published my first book titled; Chaya’s First Death-the beginning of an end to her life as an enabler. The title alone speaks for itself and it too, launched the beginning of my writing life; giving me my psuedo name- A. Life… (My legal first name and Chaya both mean; LIFE) Anyhoo, here I am today, in 2009, with 3 books and counting under my belt, and I give God all the glory.

Tell us about your current book, Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain.

Ooh! This one is my baby. It took alot of me but I enjoyed most every minute of it. Secret Wounds & Hidden Pain is a novel about 4 women; Charlene; a church-going woman who is married to an adulterous preacher, Denise; an exotic dancer who eventually finds out her ‘best customer’ holds the title of her rapist, Michelle; the wife of an abusive, jobless, porn addict, and Katrina; a successful businesswoman who secretly has abortions to maintain her status. All of them lead totally different lives while unknowingly wearing the same mask. Each woman believes no one else can see or feel what she is going through, but will individually find out that the painful wounds she is experiencing are deep enough to be seen and felt by the world.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

Being a woman and a stylist, I, myself, have experienced things but standing behind the chair…Ideas bombard my mental being until I can’t think straight. And all my clients know, because I tell them, "Ooh! I’m gone’ use that…" And they laugh, responding, "I figured you would." (LOL) Only I do change things up tremendously! I can take 5 people and make one character and visa versa.

What influenced you to write this book?

Life. Pain. Masks. Etc. And the fact that we as human beings try to hide our lives of pain behind masks of fear because we don’t want anybody to know….

Did you have a favorite character(s)? Who and why?

Not really. But if I must choose one, I’d say, Denise; because she’s been through pretty much all of what each woman has been through, collectively; yet still manages to come out, with the help of God.

What’s next for you?

Even though I have 2 more planned books tearing at the internal fibers of my being, while waiting to be released in 2010 (Spring and Fall), I have already completed the stage play for Secret Wounds…and am going to begin casting at the beginning of the year.
