Leaving a Legacy of Prayer
by Becky DeWitt
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). Many in the Body of Christ quote this scripture, but the limit the application to the area of behavior. Today, there are many of us who express that we have heard our mothers and grandmothers pray. Seldom is it said, ‘I heard my father pray.’ Regardless of your position in the family, the majority of the children of today are not hearing prayers.
Everyone at some point in the early years had to learn the basic, “Our Father’s Prayer.” It was a part of the introduction to the Word of God, just like the twenty-third Psalm and John 3:16. Let’s not forget the Bible verses that we had to memorize for Easter speeches. Everyone wanted John 3:16 because they some part of it. Anything else with a multitude of words, you were lost.
In this age of constantly changing technology, our children have ipods, MP3, and etc. The enemy is bombarding their eye and ear gates with deception through idolatry of the world system. Whatever they see, they want. Manufacturers have targeted the youth because of their purchasing power. How is it that the youth who do not work have purchasing power? Where does the currency flow from?
The youth of today have their ears filed with the words to every song, which they can recite even if they cannot read. The pronunciation of every word is in synchronization with the tune. Ask them to read and they stutter.
Make no mistake, the enemy is after our youth and has release demonic forces that were not even thought of twenty years ago. He has mothers killing their children, not only through abortion, but also after their arrival. The torment has escalated to outside the womb.
This nation has taken GOD out of just about everything, failing to realize that we need Him for everything. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27). Are we a nation of sheep? God has been speaking to us about our children, but we are not listening. How can they follow Him, if they are not hearing the truth about Him? When will they know and experience the deep intimacy of His love? I remember when there was prayer in school and it was part of the morning assembly. There were even Bible classes in high school. If your parents were not teaching you at least you were exposed through school.
The door of prayer was closed and the enemy opened the door for all of his cohorts. Everything that you could not even imagined 20-30 years ago is running rampant in the school and taken up residence. Children are the heritage of the Lord. He is looking among us to see if anyone is listening and understands HIS purpose. We are His family in the earth that is constantly being created generation-to-generation to praise Him.
The problem has escalated from a shift to a great divide. His ears listen to and from in the earth realm for the sound of innocence, the sound of those who just left His presence to become wrapped in flesh to enter into this world. “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee, and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.” (Jeremiah 1:5).
In Matthew 19:13-15, when the children were brought to Jesus to pray and put His hands on them, the disciples rebuked the people. But Jesus rebuked them. The children were still in innocence for they had not been in the world long enough to commit the many sins that they could be exposed to.
The deception of the enemy is calculated in similarity to the time Herod issued the decree to kill all the children of a certain age group. This mass genocide was an assault in an attempt to find Jesus. This not a new strategy, but one that is woven subversively in the times that we live in to escalate the damage to our youth.
We have been a thoughtless generation. We did not think to equip our children with the weapons of warfare that are not carnal, but mighty in the spirit. The watchmen came off the wall and the enemy has been allowed to bombard the children with the arrows of hell. Did we set them up to succeed or fail? Who will teach the next generation the simplicity of talking to God? Will they see the prevailing power of persistent prayer in their lives? Make a commitment to teach one. Then each one will teach one, and a mighty army of God will arise. Let the days of training begin!
“As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” (Psalm 127: 4-5).
