INTERVIEW | Shelita Williams

Shelita, describe yourself for our visitors.

I grew up in the city of Detroit, in a physically and mentally abusive environment surrounded with drugs and alcohol. As a result I became a very violent and hostile teenager. I had a very low self-esteem and the decisions that I made in life reflected it. When I was 24 I met the Man of my dreams, Jesus Christ! He changed my life and even though I have been through the fire, you can’t tell and I don’t smell like smoke! Glory be to God!

I have many hats that I wear. Being a Christian is my first and far most important hat. Without Christ and the principles of the Word of God as my foundation, I could not do or be anything. It’s in Him that I live, move and have my being. Secondly I wear the hat of being a mommy! I’m a single parent, my daughter Amber is 12. She is beautiful, intelligent and the light of my life! She is the main reason why I strive to be all that God has called me to be. I want to be an example of a Godly woman, a woman who knows and shows that there are no limits in Christ!

I graduated from ministry school in 2002. I have served in several departments at our church; Parking lot ministry, word cell leader (home bible study group), 24 hour prayer center, altar call ministry and women’s half-way homes. I believe that serving is one of the ways you find out what God has called you to do.

I have been a registered nurse for 13 years. I started my own homecare business, First Impressions Health Care Solutions, in 2005. In 2007 I started Canaan Real Estate Investments and Anointed Press Publishing. I love to play tennis although I am not very good! I like working out, jogging on the treadmill and lifting weights. My weight/health has always been an issue for me. I’m really a stickler when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I don’t believe that you can really reign in anything if you don’t have the mental, physical, and emotional stamina to do so!

I should definitely look into buying stock in two places; Starbucks and my local movie theatre! Venti latte with 6 pumps of sugar free caramel, soy and no foam is my favorite drink! I love all kinds of movies; my favorites are psychological thrillers/action movies. I think that it’s important to treat yourself and make time for YOU! No one aside from God is going to love you better than you! Israel Houghton and Martha Munizzi are my favorite artists. Currently my favorite song is “Get Up” by Mary Mary. For me it expresses the urgency that I sense in my spirit that it’s time to reign in life! Other ministries that I follow are Creflo Dollar, Joyce Meyer and TD Jakes ministries.

How do you find time to connect with God?

In the mornings is my personal prayer and confession time. I speak with God all throughout the day! God is in us and with us wherever we are and I treat Him as such. I spend a lot of time in my car so I pray and talk to God often while I’m driving. I make audio versions of my confessions and listen to them while driving. When you lead a very busy life, sometimes it can be quite difficult to spend that quality time with God. I have learned the hard way that no matter what is going on in my life, I can’t have success in any area of my life without Him. Therefore my time with Him is a priority!

Who are your favorite authors?

Miles Monroe, Robert Kiyosaki, Michelle Mckinney Hammond

Favorite books?

Apart from the bible of course, Spirit Controlled Temperament by Tim Lahaye and Discover Your God-Given Gifts by Don and Katie Fortune. I’m really big on purpose and knowing who you are in Christ. These books helped me to discover my purpose and helped me to appreciate how and why God wired me the way that He did!

Tell us about your journey to publication.

I wanted to self-publish my book. I took a 3 hour class at the local college. Kimberley Brooks, also a local author who attends the same church as I, invited me to the local American Christians Writers meeting. The meeting was excellent! I learned about Dan Poynter’s “Self Publishing Manual,” which took me through the process step by step.

Tell us about your current book?

How to Reign in Life is a Christian, non-fiction, self-help book. This book takes 7 Biblical principles derived specifically from Proverbs 12:24a which reads; The hand of the diligent shall bear rule! The word rule means to reign, have dominion and authority. In the book I show the reader how to incorporate these principles into their lives and overcome failures, fears, laziness, depression, defeat, distraction and anything that has been preventing them from achieving their goals, living their dreams and reigning in their lives! I give my personal testimony of how I utilized these principles to regain my dominion and authority and REIGN in my own life!

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

The Lord gave me the title while I was studying my Bible, meditating on the word diligent. In my mind, this was the title of my Bible study, not a book! I meditated on the scripture and I acted on the scripture and my life has not been the same since! It was like I had found the secret formula to success wrapped up in this one scripture! Yes, you can find these principles all throughout the Bible but to have them in one scripture, one word (diligent) it was amazing to me. I wanted to share with others how God showed me how to reign in life! This year, I shared what I had learned with my staff, during lunch we had Bible study. I heard praise report after praise report as they began to incorporate the principles in their lives. God wants us all to know that we can reign in life!
