How do you find time to connect with God?

I literally wake up praying and thanking the Lord for allowing me to open my eyes each morning, before my thoughts start flooding in.  As I catch myself thinking of all I have to do for the day (as opposed to praying), I turn those thoughts into prayers.  Before waking my children up for the day, I grab my bible to read my Word.  Sometimes, I spend as much as 45 minutes to an hour to as little as 10 minutes with the Lord, the important thing for me is ensuring that I spend time with Him as that how you build a relationship with someone – by spending time with them.  Lately, God has impressed upon my heart to spend more time with Him throughout the day.  Scripture says we should eat of His Word.  I don’t know about anyone else, but I eat food more than once a day and therefore, I should be feeding my spirit just as much, if not more, than I feed my flesh.

Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?

Lately, I’ve been reading books by R.C. Sproul.  But I also have Max Lucado and Stormie Omartian on my book shelves in addition to other Christian authors.  When I read secular books, lately they have been business books and articles to help me to stay informed in my field.

Tell us about your journey to publication.

When I was ready to publish, I sent out an e-mail to my network inquiring whether anyone knew of any editors or self-publishing companies that they could connect me with.  One of the individuals I was referred to was local to my area.  She and I met by phone, talked and seemed to “click” and therefore went into an agreement to work together.  From start to finish, my process was about 2 ½ years.  Once I connected with the self-publisher, everything flowed until the book was in my hands.  The most challenging part of the process was waiting for the book to be printed.  That part was beyond both mine and my publisher’s control.

Tell us about your current book?

Living on Purpose! Keys to Discovering Your God-Given Destiny is an autobiography about my journey from being a young woman with no direction or focus to a purposeful, successful professional, mother, wife and minister.  The book begins with my story of being an Administrative Assistant, single mother of one, student, renter, and one who was not active in church, let alone, ministry; to a business owner with her PhD, married, with 5 children, homeowner, minister and active in church (beyond my title).

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

My current book was birthed out of my own life experiences.  Over and over again, I was encouraged to write a book.  I always say that the book was put in me by God so when it came time to write; it simply flowed out of me.  As a result of my experiences as a single mother and student, trying to balance my work and life and beginning to desire a career (rather than a job), I learned a process of identifying my vision and setting goals for success.  Living on Purpose! tells this story and provides the reader and opportunity to realize his or her own vision.  As I matured in the Word and as I realized I was successful in following a path to achieve my goals, I decided to share my lessons and process with others.  I started by teaching a workshop on visioning and goal setting and simply turned that workshop into the book.  Living on Purpose! goes beyond an autobiography and provides the reader a workbook to help him or her, through God’s direction, to write out their own vision and goals.

What’s next for you?

I am in the process of publishing my dissertation about successful African American women.  I eventually want to transform the product of that project into a documentary.  I am also in the process of developing my coaching and consulting business, working with emerging women leaders and organizations on career development and performance management.

I am so glad that you have completed your book and that it is blessing to so many. You are a woman with many talents, and a great friend to those who share in the same types of values that you have. Continue to do all that you need to, in order to be all that God has called you to.
