By Makeisha Lee, Health and Nutritional Advisor

It definitely is a given that the American population is insanely overweight due to overeating with little to no exercise, but what about other culprits? Here are 5 most commonly overlooked ones and what to do about it:

1. Sleep Deprivation.
Research is conclusive that not sleeping enough increases hunger and appetite and may cause hormonal changes that lead to weight gain. According to a recent study in the Journal of Obesity, 33 percent of people who get less than 6 hours a night of sleep are obese, as are 26 percent of those who get 9 or more.

2. Pollution/PCBs.
PCBs and other environmental toxins can wreak havoc with the hormones that regulate fat metabolism.

3. Air Conditioning and Central Heating.
If you are rarely outside when it’s hot or cold, the body will tend to burn fewer calories due to less need of regulating the body’s thermostat.

4. Drug Side Effects.
A staggering number of commonly used prescription drugs—antidepressants, contraceptives, blood pressure and diabetes medicines, antihistamines, protease inhibitors, and mood stabilizers—cause people to gain weight, and in some cases, massive amounts.

5. Like Attracts Like.
People who have similar body types tend to couple up and pass along genes that predispose offspring to obesity. What should you do? Of course, regular physical activity can rev up the body’s metabolic engines so to speak, but here are 3 simple mind-body techniques to get you started:

  • Replace negative statements with positive ones – your subconscious is always at work.
  • Eliminate the word “try” from your vocabulary and just get it done!
  • Your beliefs will create your reality, so you must truly believe you can lose weight – and you will!
