Julie, describe yourself for our visitors.
I was born in Louisville, KY and the oldest of 3 daughters in a Christian family. My father is a retired teacher/business man and my mom is a fantastic homemaker. I am boldly committed to God, family and ministry. I sang my first solo in church at age 9 and this lead to directing choirs and singing across the country, Jamaica and Switzerland. My favorite singers are Tramaine Hawkins, Ce Ce Winans, Yolanda Adams, Aretha Franklin and Indie Aire, just to name a few. When I am not singing, I am writing music or motivational writings for my monthly newsletter “A JAR in the Potter’s Hands” or an upcoming book.
How do you find time to connect with God?
I am an early riser. I am usually awake by 5:30 a.m. This gives me quiet time to pray, mediate and receive strength from God each day. I also work 45 minutes from home and spend time in worship in the car.
Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?
For years I have been a romance novel fan of Brenda Jackson, Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, etc. In recent years, I have been reading christian, inspirational writers such as T. D. Jakes, Joyce Meyer, John Maxwell, etc.
Tell us about your journey to publication.
I truly can’t take credit for being published except God said that it was time to publish a book of my writings. He said for me to take the things that I have given you and help somebody else. My first book was published by a traditional publisher recommended by several other authors. My husband has been my number #1 supporter of my writing and I thank God for him every day for his love, support and criticism.
Tell us about your current book?
“A New Season in Word: Inspirations for Divine Living” is a collection of poems and inspirational writings written the past 12 years. Each poem or inspirational writing is designed to inspire, motivate and encourage people to be the best they can be. I believe and pray that people of all ages and walks of life will identify and connect with the poems and writings in this book.
How did you come up with ideas for this book?
In 1994, I went through a divorce. Anyone who has been through a divorce, no matter the circumstances and details, knows that it is an emotionally horrific experience. Divorce is something that I don’t wish on my worst enemy. During the days following my divorce, I began to journal and collected several spiral notebooks of poems and encouraging writings. These writings were intended only for my own expression and eventually, my healing process. Although I am healed and happily remarried in 2006, God said that it was time to collect, organize and publish the writings to help others.
