INTERVIEW | Monique Miller

Monique, describe yourself for our visitors.

I am a pretty easy going person who loves a good book or suspense movie with a good plot.  I spend most of my free time listening to books on CD.

How do you find time to connect with God?

Most times I connect with God when I am alone especially at night when things are quite.

Who are your favorite authors? Favorite books?

Some of my favorite authors are James Patterson, VC Andrews, Kimberla Lawson Roby and one of my favorite books is The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah.

Tell us about your journey to publication.

My journey to publication took 5 1/2 years.  It only took me 4 months to write the first draft of my manuscript, but for the next 5 years or so I searched for a publisher and agent and received rejection letter after rejection letter.  Though there were numerous stumbling blocks, I kept the faith and after 5 1/2 long years of waiting I finally got a 2 book deal through Urban Books.

Tell us about your current book?

My current novel is titled Soul Confessions – it is the sequel to my first novel Secret Sisterhood.  Soul Confessions continues a story about Phillip and Shelby a married couple from my first novel.  Phillip has some skeletons in his closet which he’s tried very hard to keep from his wife Shelby.  But just as with life, many skeletons don’t stay quiet and Phillip’s end up literally knocking on the front door of his home.  The novel is Christian fiction meant to show that we are all human and make mistakes but with the help of God’s guiding hand we can overcome trials and tribulations.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

I came up with the idea for the first book while I, in my own personal life was dealing with some problems with infertility.  In Secret Sisterhood the three main characters all have some sort of problem with infertility.  What I  have found from personal experience is that many time African American women will have problems with fertility but often keep their problems to themselves struggling emotionally, not realizing there are other women who look just like them going through some of the same problems.  Thus I wanted to write a book for women to let them know they are not alone in their emotional struggle to deal with their infertility.  I also wanted to provide a little education on the infertility process for those women / couples who are just starting to realize they may have a problem.

List your three most recent books.

  • 1st novel – Secret Sisterhood.
  • 2nd novel – Soul Confessions.
  • 3rd Novel – Redemption Lake (December 2009)

What’s next for you?

I love to write and am currently working on the outlines for books four, five and six!
