In Pursuit of the Perfect Gift

It’s time to find the perfect gift! Some people actually live for this time of year when the crowds are out in massive numbers and available parking seems to be miles away. I prefer to do my shopping early, but as usual I have managed to get behind. A long time ago I learned to budget, use the debit card and leave the credit cards alone. Nothing is more depressing than having more bills than you can afford to pay in January.

As a child, I spent a lot of time gazing through the Sears Wish Book. On Christmas day it was a wonderful feeling to tear open the doll or toy I had been drooling over for months. Now that I’m older, a similar joy floats through my spirit when I purchase gifts for family and friends. Usually sometime in November I will ask or search for ideas. I believe the best gifts are the ones that prove to be beneficial for a period of time for the recipient. Something the person can use or if it’s a child, something challenging for a growing mind.

As you purchase gifts for people on your Christmas list, do you give careful thought about the gift? Why are you giving the gift? Is it to get something in return? As we get caught up in the season, it’s a good time to examine our hearts especially as Christians. The story of the three wise men has become the basis for “why” gifts are apart of the Christmas season. These three wise men traveled far from the East on a mission to find the Christ child (now about two years old according to biblical scholars) and present him with gifts

“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.” Matthew 2:11 NIV

Notice in the verse it states, “they bowed down and worshiped him” before they actually presented the gifts to Jesus. It’s very easy to get caught up in the frenzy of buying gifts, but we must remember to “bow down and worship” Jesus during this season. He already provided us with the perfect gift, one with eternal benefits.

We may be able to find the latest toy craze this Christmas season and present it to a delighted youngster on Christmas day, but the gift of salvation will last long after the wish list “gift” has lost its appeal.

Share the story of Jesus with someone who needs to be encouraged this season. Jesus is the Reason for the Season! Yes, I know this sounds like another one of the cliches us Christians throw around. Should it be another cliche? I don’t think so. During the gift hunt, take the time to worship. Find a song. No, not “Jingle Bells.”
