INTERVIEW | Sonya Visor

Sonya, describe yourself for our visitors.

How do I describe me? Well, this is what others say: perfectionist, hyper, warm hearted and definitely a people person. I make people think that they have known me for years. I can go in a grocery store and just start talking to whoever is next to me. The person will walk away and think, Do I know you? I love to read, all time favorite pass time. I had to literally fast from reading to meet writing deadlines. I enjoy contemporary gospel and jazz.

In my ministry that the Lord has given me, I am drawn to women who are broken. I deal with real issues in Covenant Sisters a ministry at our church that is now open to the community. This ministry is for those who are tired of the “mask” – they need to take it off and be free to be who God created them to be.

How do you find time to connect with God?

I have to be with God early in the morning! Why? Because working a full time job, taking care of my home, helping my son (run errands) pastoring duties and let’s not forget writing – I have to get God in first or I won’t. I could do it, but I don’t believe it would be quality time. Because once I place my head on that pillow – I’m out.

Tell us about your journey to publication.

I have had a passion to write for a long time. I just got serious about it a few years ago when our church need a fund raiser. That was the birth of Left Behind. That play packed the house! My first manuscript, Mercy Saw Me, never was sent out. But I did circulate Who I’ve Become is NOT who I am and received rejection letters or no response. I stayed encouraged, knowing that at the right time the book would be brought to full maturation. When I received a letter from a publishing house that I loved encouraging me to continue to write – a new burst of energy came forth. In prayer, I heard a stirring, and I sensed that this was the time for this book. The demand is there. I pray that lives will be blessed by my story that God took me through.

Tell us about your current book?

Who I’ve Become is NOT who I am, was birthed from my years of covering up the real me. It came to a point where I was about to take my own life. I had created a being that was far from what God wanted. My life was formed and shaped by trials and choices, just like yours. God redirected me and caused me to stand up and rebuke death from. It was not my season to die. For an excerpt go to
